L'Anse aux Meadows, Newfoundland

Home

In about 1960, L'Anse aux Meadows was found to be the site of a Viking encampment inhabited about 1000 years ago. The site was reconstructed to resemble the living conditions that the Vikings experienced. I'm not sure the Vikings were quite as well fed as our guide was though.

Part of the present day town in the foreground with the coast of Labrador across the Strait of Belle Isle. Note the constant presence of icebergs. The Strait is closed in Winter and well into Spring as it has a solid ice covering.

That's the coast of Labrador that you see in the distance on the left.
